Knights of Columbus

The following is an excerpt from the book By Their Works, by Stephen Singular.

A young man was born in Baltimore in the 1920 and because of the circumstances of the day he was sent to live in an orphanage run by the Xaverain Brothers. George grew up under the tutelage of Brother Mattius, nicknamed “Coach” who taught the young men in his care athletics and discipline. George blossomed into a baseball talent who tried out and signed a contract with the Baltimore Orioles.

The young man was traded to the Boston Red Sox and joined the Knights of Columbus Pere Marquette Council 271. He had a good year, hitting 29 homeruns breaking the major league record of the day. Later he helped baseball remove the tarnished image it had received because of the infamous Black Sox scandal. His popularity grew and grew as he moved from Boston to the New York Yankees.

The adult man never forgot his roots as a Catholic and an orphan. When he retired from baseball, he visited orphans all over the country, dropping in on hospitals and reformatories, giving away mementos and establishing charitable foundations that stand to this day. He died of cancer at the age of 53 receiving last rites a month earlier from Father Thomas Kaufman, who was quoted as saying that “The Babe said his prayers to the very end and died a good Catholic.” The man’s full name, George Herman Ruth.

Reading glasses

Old Reading Glasses Needed

We need your old reading glasses for people who come to Detox and Treatment Centers, who do not have any glasses. They are unable to journal, do work sheets, or read recovery literature without them. If you could please contribute your old reading glasses, it would be of great help. A good number of these folks are indigent, veterans, and/or dual diagnosed with no means to afford their own glasses. They could also use magazines, books, jigsaw puzzles. A lot to ask, but a gift that is so necessary. Please leave your donations in the collection box in the Aquinas Center.
